Fractured Nine Patch, featuring Coma

In an earlier post I showed pics of the quilting on my fractured nine patch quilt.  Now I would like to share with you how I pieced the quilt.

From assorted 5" squares, piece together a nine patch block.  Slash the block 8" from the left side, and 8" from the bottom.

Cut 1 1/2" strips of your background fabric as sashing.  Add a strip to the top and middle of the left hand side of the block, and a piece to the middle and bottom of the right hand side of the block.

Add a sashing piece to the centre, and your block is complete.  I made 12 blocks and then set them using 1 1/2" sashing between blocks. You may add sashing however you like.

A quick and easy pattern suitable for charm packs or layer cakes.  Works great with scraps as well!

  5. I love it! I finished my Diamonds quilt, had enough pieces for a second quilt so I cut more big diamonds, used the end pieces from the 6 1/2 inch strips to make a runner with half square rectangles, made a second star runner from leftover large diamonds, another runner from the little strip pieces and finally a star shaped table topper from the bits left from trimming the side diamonds...now if I make these there may be no leftovers....who am I kidding!!
    Love your patterns,

  6. What a great idea. Another reason to like nine patch pattern. I like the way you have staggered the blocks.
